Markl quietly mentions to Sophie Howl has done this before when one of his girlfriends broke up with him. He attempts to summon demonic forces, but Sophie saves him. One day, Sophie causes Howl to have a breakdown because she had accidentally causes him to change his hair color to an orange-pink hue. Meanwhile, their country and the neighboring country is at war with each other. Pretty soon, Howl appears and Sophie is hired as their new cleaning woman. Finding Howl's gigantic castle, Sophie is allowed in by Howl's fire demon, Calcifer, and meets his apprentice, Markl.

Happy and fun, but, a bit timid, Sophie politely declines their flirting when Howlappears. However, Sophie is walking down an alley when two guards stop to flirt with her. After a debate and in a hurry, Sophie leaves to go visit her younger sister, Lettie. Hearing the excitement over the great wizard Howl, Sophie's sisters chatter on about how Howl has the capability of eating one's heart. In the beginning of the film, Sophie, her sisters and her mother are all working in a hat shop as a train rolls by. Despite her misgivings, she ends up tolerating the Witch of the Wasteafter she is turned feeble by the royal sorceress Madame Suliman. She also serves as a maternal figure to Markl and a friend to Calciferand Turnip Head. She develops feelings for the poor, cowardly wizard. Tired of wizard Howl's indolence, she initiates cleaning his castle. She is far too mature and serious for her age, much to the chagrin of her sister Lettie and stepmother Honey. Sophie is a reserved, plain-looking young woman. Afterward she tucks her shoulder-length hair behind her ears. She later cuts her hair and gives it to Calcifer in order to move the castle. Her hair becomes silver as a side effect of the curse Howl likes it because it looks like starlight. Sophie's braid is shorter in her old form. Throughout the rest of the film, her old form doesn't suffer back pain and she stands straighter her wrinkles also smoothen. When defending Howl to Sullivan, Sophie briefly regains her original appearance, but turns back after.
